Decomposed granite (DG) is a finer, more angular material that compacts into a semi-firm surface when laid. It works well for pathways, patios, and landscaping beds where a natural, earthy appearance and some surface stability are needed. Regular decorative gravel is coarser and does not compact the same way. It stays loose and is better suited for drainage-focused applications, ornamental beds, and areas where foot traffic is minimal. Coverage varies by material and depth. A standard 2–3 inch layer of decorative gravel or river rock typically requires about one ton per 80–100 square feet. Decomposed granite and finer materials cover a similar range at standard depth. Mulch coverage is measured in cubic yards rather than tons.
