A standard hardscape base uses 4–6 inches of compacted base material depending on soil conditions and expected load. For a patio, that base layer is typically crushed gravel compacted in lifts, topped with a 1-inch sand setting bed for flagstone or paver installs. As a rough rule, 1 ton of base gravel covers approximately 80–100 square feet at a 2-inch depth. For full base depth requirements, multiply accordingly. Crushed granite is angular, chunky, and does not compact significantly. It works well as a decorative surface material and for drainage applications where loose rock is preferred. Decomposed granite (DG) is finer, more granular, and compacts into a semi-firm surface when laid and packed. DG is the better choice for pathways, patios, and any application where you want the material to stay in place underfoot.
